City Town Info: http://www.citytowninfo.com/
This web site uses information from "government agencies, research conducted by Moving Traffic, and research licensed from third parties" in order to provide the most up-to-date and accurate information so that you, the average citizen, can compare and contrast easy-to-read data on-line!
Once you have a list of cities, go through and compare them. Think about what you value in a community and create a ranked list of those values. For example: I don't have a car, so I'm going to need to use public transportation. I also know that I'm used to living in a suburban area, so I would prefer a population of about 8,000. Then, one by one, see how each of the cities you wish to explore fulfills each value.
