Temp Agencies--could unlock new doors

Temping can be a great way to network, learn/improve new skills, and pay the bills if you're in transition. If you've been searching for that ultimate job without any luck, don't give up--be strategic.

Consider your perfect job as a mixed bag of different skills. Take a piece of paper and write down those separate skills areas. Are there a few areas where you could use some more experience? Circle them. These are the areas you'll want to develop while you're in transition so that you'll be more competitive when that perfect job becomes available.

Often times, a temp agency can help you find positions where one of those skill sets is present; you just have to be flexible. In addition, a temp agency can review your skill areas and try to connect you with an area that you are familiar with. Once in that position, seek out opportunities to improve upon the skills that you circled in the original brainstorm. Volunteer to help out with a project, take a class in a new technical application. In other words, continue to build skills while in that temporary position.

Who knows?! You may really like the organization you're temping with and land a job full-time!
