Helpful Hints to Navigate Office Parties SmoothlyOn Monday, you notice an invitation in your mailbox from the woman who works in the office next to you. She’s inviting you to her son’s graduation party. In this type of situation, you can say “no” if you’re not interested in attending, you can wear whatever you want, and eat and drink whatever you would like. On Tuesday, you receive an invitation from the President of your company requesting your attendance at the annual Holiday Party. This is a whole different ballgame.
First, you really shouldn’t decline your boss’ invitation to the company party. Don’t be that anti-social employee who never shows up to anything. This is the time where you should take advantage of networks and make acquaintances out of those who could help further your career down the road. Make it a goal to meet at least one influential person. Be strategic in your effort. Second--and I can’t stress this one enough-- please go light on conversation and on the refreshments. In other words, don’t treat this opportunity as you would the open bar at your best friend’s wedding. Finally, unlike the graduation party, you should have appropriate attire, and if you’re not sure what that may be, call and ask the host/hostess what the appropriate wear for the evening/afternoon will be.
As mentioned before, casual get-togethers outside of work should be treated as so. Office parties are a whole different ballgame. Hit a homerun with your boss and avoid any technical fouls by showing up for game, providing light, upbeat conversation and by sending a thank you note!
