Preparing for Graduate School Fairs

You see all of the posters advertising the upcoming Graduate School Fair, but you have no idea how to get ready, right? Like all other fairs, there are common preparation tips that you can follow to have a successful experience:

1. The first is to do your research: You may not have all day to make your way around the fair, so research the schools and programs beforehand so that you know who to target.

2. Prepare some questions to ask the recruiters: By having specific questions prepared, recruiters will know that you are truly interested and invested in their programs. Here are some possible questions to consider-

  • I’d like to get some information on your degree in _______.
  • What are the admission requirements for this degree? Find out about standardized examinations, essays, letters of recommendations, prerequisite courses, writing samples, cost to apply.
  • How many students are currently enrolled in this program?
  • Are there prerequisite courses I should take before applying to and/or attending this program?
  • Are interviews and/or campus visits offered?
  • When are the application deadlines?
  • What application factors are given the most weight?
  • What percentage of your applicants are accepted?
  • Do you give any advanced standing for coursework and/or experience?
  • What is the tuition?
  • What courses are required for this degree? What are the elective courses available?
  • Is there an experiential component within the degree requirements (internship, practicum)?
  • What areas are targets for faculty research?
  • Are there on-campus housing/meal plans offered to graduate students?
  • What financial aid options are available?
  • How accessible are the libraries, computer facilities, recreational facilities, parking, etc. for graduate students?
  • What is the average class size for this program? The student to faculty ratio?
  • Will I have an advisor/mentor for this program, and how is that person chosen?
  • What are your recent graduates doing? Is there career assistance available for graduate students?
  • Is it possible to speak with a current student and/or recent graduate?
  • May I contact you with any additional questions?

3. Prepare to speak about yourself: It's likely that the recruiters will want to get to know you a bit, so make sure you're prepared to answer questions about your education up to this point and goals for the future.

4. Dress appropriately: First impressions are everything, so make sure you are clean cut and exude maturity. I always say that it's better to overdress than to underdress, so take a look at the Florida State web site for ideas on what to wear.

5. Become familiar with the layout: Knowing where the schools are will help you look prepared at the fair and it will help you make the best use of your time.

6. Make sure you get a business card from each representative, and pick up materials that are pertinent to your selected programs.

7. After the fair, take some time to review the information you have received. Make an appointment with a career counselor to help you sort through the programs and target those best for your goals.
