In addition to the application, some schools require a campus visit or interview, and if they don't, it's always a smart idea to go on one.
"What do I do? What do I say? What do I ask?"
I have been receiving a bunch of questions concerning graduate school visits and interviews. Here are some brief pointers about navigating the visit as well as some sample questions that you could pose an admissions representative:
A few quick pointers about the visit:
- Try to arrive 15 minutes early
- Dress in business attire
- Bring copies of your resume/other materials
- Ask for business cards & send thank you notes when you leave
- Research the program before the interview or visit
- Be prepared to answer questions about your interest in the field and thoughts for the future.
Here are some questions you might consider asking at the graduate school visit:
- How is the curriculum set up?
- Are there core courses that all students must complete?
- Are there on-line/evening options available?
- Do students typically complete the program full or part-time?
- What is the faculty/student ratio?
- What is the average number of years that most students stay in the program?
- What kind of internship/practicum opportunities are available? Are these required, and is there assistance with placement?
- What kind of academic and career counseling is available to students?
- Is there a mentor/advisor system?
- What type of facilities are available to graduate students (housing, library, gym, computer)?
- Are there teaching assistantships or graduate assistantships available?
- Do most students receive some type of financial aid in their first year?
- Are there workshops available to assist students with budgeting and financial planning?
- Are there jobs available in the area?
- Would they suggest working while going to school?
- How successful are graduates of this program in getting jobs? What kinds of jobs?
Good luck!!
Remember: Always go with your gut on visits-you'll know if the school feels like the right fit.
