What can I do with a major in....?

I know that I can become a teacher if I pursue a degree in Education.
I know that I can become a police officer if I pursue a degree in Criminal Justice.
I know that.....and the list goes on.

The question is; what else can I do with a major in (insert your major?). The key to discovering what else exists beyond those common, well-known careers is to start with one job and one great government-sponsored web site.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook provides a wealth of occupational information concerning the nature of work, working conditions, training and education, earnings, and job outlook for hundreds of different occupations. To access this site, copy and paste the following URL into your browswer: http://www.bls.gov/oco/

From there, you will notice a tab labeled, "A-Z index." Here's where the brainstorming begins. Begin with a familiar occupation title such as 'Teachers.' Within the description of teachers, scroll down to the "Related Occupations" section. There you will see the following lists: "teachers—postsecondary; counselors; teacher assistants; education administrators; librarians; childcare workers; public relations specialists; social workers; and athletes, coaches, umpires, and related workers."

Now your list includes ten new occupations you may not have considered at the beginning of your search. If you continue to click on the occupations listed to research more 'related occupations' your list will continue expanding. This snowball-like technique will definitely boost your potential list of careers!
